Highland County has a rich connection to the American Revolution.
After the War of 1783 ended, many war veterans were issued land grants in the the new Northwest Territory (included present day Ohio).
Many of these patriots and their families and their families settled in what is now Highland County, Ohio.
To honor these patriots for their contributions and sacrifices the community has embarked on constructing a Revolutionary War Memorial on the Hillsboro Courthouse grounds.
The dedication of this monument is planned for July 4th, 2026 which is the 250th anniversary of the founding of our great country.
Sponsors of this effort include the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society (SOGS).
The monument will list the founding fathers of Highland County who were Revolutionary War Patriots who lived, died or are buried in Highland County.
At this point, there are two-hundred and twenty-one (221) patriots who have been confirmed.
There is an original plaque sponsored by the DAR which has ninety-three (93). This plaque will remain in place on the corner of the Hillsboro Courthouse wall.
The new monument will include all the 221 patriots including the 93 displayed today. The research into known Revolutionary War patriots continues and provision for additional names to be added.
